What Is The Stripe Method? Is That Work For Individual Tiger’s Identification?

In The Earlier When The Project Tiger Start In 1970s, The Indian Forest Department Created The Method Of Pugmark Identification To Distinguish Between Tigers And Arrive At An Estimate Of The Number Of Tigers In A Park.

What Is The Pugmark?

It Has Been One Of The Most Popular Ways Of Counting Tigers. Each Tiger Is Known To Leave A Distinct Pugmark On The Ground And These Are Different From The Others In The Big Cat Family.

Photographs Or Plaster Casts Of These Pugmarks Are Then Analysed To Assess The Tiger Numbers.

Study Of Pug Marks Can Provide The Following Information Reliably If Analyzed Skillfully:
  1. Presence Of Different Species In The Area Of Study.
  2. Identification Of Individual Animals.
  3. Sex Ratio And Age (Young Or Adult) Of Large Cats.
Wildlife Scientist Proved That The Pugmark Comparison Was Highly Unreliable, Since The
Same Tiger’s Pugmarks Could Look Very Different Depending On The Terrain.Since Then, Stripe Patterns Have Been Recognized The Most Reliable And Unique Identifiers.

During The 2006 Census, The Camera Trapping Method Pioneered By Dr. Ullas Karanth Was Used By WII And NTCA In Various Tiger Reserves For The First Time And Since Then Photographic Evidence Has Continuously Gained Importance. Photographs Taken By Tourists Also Prove To Be An Excellent Resource To Identify, Track And Monitor Individual Tigers Every Season.

Now, Mostly Wildlife Officers Used One Kind Mobile Application Which Is M-Strlpes. M-Strlpes Is Monitoring System For Tigers-Intensive Protection And Ecological Status To Estimate Big Population.

This Mobile App Records The Track A Forest Official Walks And Geotags The Sightings Of Tigers And Even Other Animals Or Signs Which Helps In The Estimation, Mr. Jhala Said. It Was Easier This Time But The Data Was Huge, He Added.According To The Report, Data Was Received From 491 Forest Divisions And It Was Processed Using M-Stripes Software.

Y V Jhala Is Scientist, Tiger Cell At The Wildlife Institute Of India (WII), An Autonomous Institution Of The Environment Ministry.

The M-Stripes Is The Application Which Is Used By Forest Guards, Is GPS-Enabled And Helps To Capture Data Relating To Tiger Sightings, Deaths, Wildlife Crime And Ecological Observations While Patrolling.

Due To This Application 80% Of Tigers Photographs Were Captured Through Camera-Trapping Methodology This Time, Compared To 70% In 2014, The Report Said. Around 27,000 Camera Traps Were Set Up In 141 Locations Covering 1,21,337 Sq Km And They Took Nearly 3.48 Crore Photographs, About 80,000 Being Of Tigers.

The Other Software Used For Tiger Estimation Was Spatially Explicit Capture Recapture (SECR) Which Helps Differentiate Between The Stripes Of Tigers As Each Has A Different Pattern.

Which Methods Are Useful In Tiger Census ?

There Are Mainly Three Techniques Are Available For Tiger Census:
  1. Pugmark Technique
  2. Installation Of Cameras
  3. Double Sampling Technique
